Description

The Alfa Romeo SZ (Sprint Zagato) is the ultimate sporting development of Alfa Romeo's legendary Giulietta. It was based on the shorter chassis of the Giulietta Spider combined with the mechanicals of the racier Sprint Veloce and was specially prepared for competition by Zagato in direct agreement with Alfa Romeo. Ercole Spada designed the body in Bertone's studio, while the aluminum bodywork was constructed at Zagato's workshop. The cars were quite expensive owing to the 300 hours necessary to build the bodies.

The tiny sports car used a space frame chassis, which was totally unlike the production Giulietta. Zagato also used perspex side windows and a relatively sparse interior to help reduce weight (the car weighs just 770kg). As a result the SZ was much faster than its steel-bodied production counterparts.

A few more than 200 examples were built, and they became the weapon of choice in the small bore production class. The last 44 examples featured a long Kamm tail called the 'Coda tronca'. The 'Coda Tronca' was designed with a lower roof line as well as the Kamm tail, which made for better aerodynamics.
