The Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina debuted at the 2006 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elégance. The car is a one-off, based on a Ferrari Enzo, commissioned by James Glickenhaus, the American filmmaker / investor / car collector with a yen for the legendary racing cars of the Sixties.
While being Ferrari's house designer but getting itchy about the lack of creative freedom in their projects commissioned by Ferrari and therefore in desperate need of a true new show case, Pininfarina asked James Glickenhaus if he would be interested to commission them a one-off Ferrari. Starting from a Ferrari Enzo, the aim was to produce a sole vehicle inspired by sport racing cars with extreme vocations, unhindered by Ferrari marketeers' meddling. Glickenhaus owns a genuine 330 P4 which had to become the source of inspiration. P4/5 became a modern day interpretation of a P4 and the famous CanAm cars. Some call it retro design, Pininfarina prefers to describe the P4/5 design as 'neo-classic'.
It is not just a show-car but a vehicle to be enjoyed on the road. And that is exactly what Mr. Glickenhaus is doing. The car travels all over the world, making many miles on the street and the track.
Initially, Ferrari wasn't happy with this project being outside their control and refused to cooperate. The car 'could not be a Ferrari'. While this brought Pininfarina in a slightly awkward split, Glickenhaus pursued his plan, "with or without Ferrari". But when Luca di Montezemolo was invited to come and see the 'body in white' in Turin, it all changed. He was heavily impressed ("Bella!") and stated: "this car can not NOT be a Ferrari". The P4/5 ended up in Ferrari's official history books.
Two additional cars were built:
- P4/5 Competizione (2011)
- P4/5 Competizione M Hybrid (2012)
I am not a natural flatterer, I like to think that I "tell it like it is", politely I hope. So when I tell you that I am very impressed by the contents of your website, it is just not English politeness. I of course love the subject matter but you deal with it in an energetic and respectful manner. I am overwhelmed by the research that has gone into compiling the list of coachbuilders/bodybuilders for Europe and North America. I have never heard of the vast majority of them.
Congratulations on an excellent website.
