The blue Rolls-Royce New Phantom (later referred to as Phantom I) pictured here has chassis number 17EX (EX for Experimental) and is one of three experimental chassis (15 EX, 16EX and 17EX) delivered to Jarvis & Sons, Hooper and Barker in 1928. Earlier another experimental chassis (10EX) had been delivered to Barker.
A variety of experimental parts were tested on chassis 17EX before the lightweight Torpedo body was fitted in 1929. Upon completion 17EX was sold to Maharaja Hari Sigh Bahadur, ruler of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, whose family already owned about 26 Rolls-Royces. He kept the car until 1932.
The car remained in India up until 1976 when it was recovered in a bad state in Calcutta. The car was sold to a Canadian and later to Veniero Molari from Italy, who sold the car to Victor R. Muller, CEO of the revived Dutch Automobile brand Spyker Cars, in 1998.
After a thorough and lengthy restoration, the unique Jarvis Torpedo was first shown at the 2006 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este by Mr. Muller. 17EX was awarded with the Trofeo Rolls Royce for the most elegant Rolls Royce in the show.
In 2009 Victor Muller decided to part from his beloved experimental Rolls-Royce and put it up for auction.
The present owner (2014) is Alexander Schaufler (Austria). Many thanks for the images and drawings you sent us!
I am not a natural flatterer, I like to think that I "tell it like it is", politely I hope. So when I tell you that I am very impressed by the contents of your website, it is just not English politeness. I of course love the subject matter but you deal with it in an energetic and respectful manner. I am overwhelmed by the research that has gone into compiling the list of coachbuilders/bodybuilders for Europe and North America. I have never heard of the vast majority of them.
Congratulations on an excellent website.
