Chassis #57717 is one of the many T57s to receive a body by Gangloff of Colmar. The car was owned for over 50 years by British Midland Motors Museum founder, Mr. Robert, who had upgraded the engine in this Type 57 to supercharged Type 57C specification. Many owners had the Bugatti factory itself perform the conversion. However, Bugatti was long out of business when Roberts decided to have his car's powertrain upgraded in 1964. Roberts also changed the standard four-speed manual transmission with a Cotal electromagnetic pre-selector four-speed gearbox.
Mr. Robert purchased this car in 1950, and it remained in his charge until his death in 1990. It was purchased by Mr. Schermerhorn of The Netherlands, directly from Mr. Roberts' estate in 2000. It has been carefully maintained in the Schermerhorn Collection ever since, but in October 2009 the car was offered for sale by RM Auctions with an estimate of £400,000.- to £460,000.-
T57 #57715 sold at a price of £440,000.- / 494,000.- Euros / 739,000.- USD.
I am not a natural flatterer, I like to think that I "tell it like it is", politely I hope. So when I tell you that I am very impressed by the contents of your website, it is just not English politeness. I of course love the subject matter but you deal with it in an energetic and respectful manner. I am overwhelmed by the research that has gone into compiling the list of coachbuilders/bodybuilders for Europe and North America. I have never heard of the vast majority of them.
Congratulations on an excellent website.
