The Bugatti Type 57 Stelvio, chassis 57435, pictured here, was invoiced new on 11th June 1937 to one Mr. Peigues Seligmann, a Bugatti agent in France. It was used as Mr. Seligmann's demonstration car. In 1937, the maroon coachwork was priced at more than 18,450 French Francs - a small fortune at the time.
#57435 was later sold to Auguste Lis of Strasbourg, who in turn sold the car in 1960 to one J.A. Veldkamp of Groningen, Holland. J.D. Legger of England purchased the car in 1967 and had it repainted British Racing Green with an Apple Green interior. Thereafter the car is believed to have spent most of its life in England before being exported in 1999 to a collector in Germany. He laid the car up in 2000, and since that time, it has changed ownership once more to Switzerland. At some time, after the car's stay in Holland, the car's rear end has been changed. It lost its rear bumper, received different tail lights and a spare wheel cover now graces the boot lid.
I am not a natural flatterer, I like to think that I "tell it like it is", politely I hope. So when I tell you that I am very impressed by the contents of your website, it is just not English politeness. I of course love the subject matter but you deal with it in an energetic and respectful manner. I am overwhelmed by the research that has gone into compiling the list of coachbuilders/bodybuilders for Europe and North America. I have never heard of the vast majority of them.
Congratulations on an excellent website.
