The Bugatti pictured here was first owned by the 5th Marquess of Cholmondeley and his wife Sybil, the Marchioness of Cholmondeley. The Cholmondeleys had purchased Bugattis over an eighteen year period stretching from 1921 to 1939 and were amongst Ettore's most loyal customers. Typically, their cars were adorned with a gold over black pinstriped colour scheme.
On 7th February, 1939 an invoice was issued for a rolling chassis (#57739) which was then fitted with sumptuous Figoni and Falaschi pillarless saloon coachwork. The car was registered as FUW 180 on 1st May, 1939 and remained with the family until it was eventually sold to a gentleman named Turner.
I am not a natural flatterer, I like to think that I "tell it like it is", politely I hope. So when I tell you that I am very impressed by the contents of your website, it is just not English politeness. I of course love the subject matter but you deal with it in an energetic and respectful manner. I am overwhelmed by the research that has gone into compiling the list of coachbuilders/bodybuilders for Europe and North America. I have never heard of the vast majority of them.
Congratulations on an excellent website.
