This Duesenberg (# J212-2234) was originally built in 1932 as a short-wheelbase four-door Derham-bodied sedan. The car was sold to Dr. Seeley Mudd, who sent the car to Bohman & Schwartz to have a new body installed. Upon his specific desires, this new car would be exact to the dimensions and requests of Dr. Mudd.
The car, now known as the "Mudd Coupe", rolled out of the Bohman and Schwartz shop in 1937. True to Dr. Mudd's vision, the bold, yet some might say sinister, design of this Duesenberg employed aerodynamic principles that were only experimental in the 1930s. Body panels were covered with leather-like Zapon cloth. The car also featured a large sliding sunroof. When it was new it was all black.
At some time a supercharger was added and later, when it was repainted in three tone colors, the car became known as "The Circus Wagon". It was originally fitted with an external polished exhaust manifold, which had later been replaced by flex-pipes, but today, as restored by Rick Carroll, it has the solid pipe again.
I am not a natural flatterer, I like to think that I "tell it like it is", politely I hope. So when I tell you that I am very impressed by the contents of your website, it is just not English politeness. I of course love the subject matter but you deal with it in an energetic and respectful manner. I am overwhelmed by the research that has gone into compiling the list of coachbuilders/bodybuilders for Europe and North America. I have never heard of the vast majority of them.
