Mario Petrucci, a versatile artist who also and above all worked in the fields of painting and sculpture and in the production of scale models for some of the most famous shipyards in Viareggio, founded the company LASAMEA (acronym for Laboratorio Artigiano Sperimentale Aeromeccanica Medica E Affini - Experimental Craft Laboratory for Aeromechanics, Medicine and the Like) in the early 1960s. His company specialised in the manufacture of medical equipment, especially portable respirators, for which he even held a patent, and those fitted to ambulances and medical boats. In 1971 he moved from his original workshop in Viale Europa to a new one in Via di Coli in Massarosa.

In the early 1980s, Petrucci transformed the company into a manufacturer of ambulances, mainly based on the Volkswagen T3. Some hearses based on the Subaru Legacy and the VW Passat were also built. From the 1990s onwards, the ambulances became larger, mainly based on the Fiat Ducato, but also including Volkswagen LT, Mercedes Sprinter and Ford Transit. Special medical vehicles of various origins were built, including even a Russian UAZ 469, completed the range.
Annual production was inevitably rather low, given the lack of employees and the high level of craftsmanship.
One speaks of no more than 6-7 units per year, plus smaller equipment such as vehicles for social services or small local fire brigades.
In 1990 the company was renamed Nuova Lasamea and from 2003 it was called Lasamea Special Cars.
The company was a family business from the beginning, and so the management gradually passed to that of his son Umberto, who in recent years still had his eldest son Alessandro at his side.
Mario Petrucci died in 2010.
The economic crisis that had hit Italy in all sectors during those years, combined with the small size of the company and the impact of the decline in orders, led the owner to close the business one year after the founder's death.
