1925 Amilcar 4CGS by Duval

This car is believed to be the official show car introduced at the New York Salon in 1926. It was delivered for $1850 to NY and promised 75 mph. Discovered in Pennsylvania in 1947, it stayed in North America until 1995. It was then exported to Holland for a restoration, and returned tot he states in 2001. This roadster bodied car by Carrosserie Charles Duval of Paris, has won its class at the Concours d'Elegance Place Loo in the Netherlands as well as other shows.

I assume this one also carries a body by Duval.

39 bhp, 1,074 cc side-valve four-cylinder engine, three-speed manual transmission, solid front axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, live rear axle with quarter-elliptic leaf springs and four-wheel mechanical drum brakes. Wheelbase: 2,450 mm (96.5")

Often described as the “quintessential French sports car,” Amilcar took its name from those of its founders, Joseph Lamy and Emile Akar. The first car, the Type CC, was designed by ex-Citroën engineer Edmond Moyet. A small tourer with a 903 cc engine, it was quite successful at hillclimbs, leading Lamy to consider an overt sporting model. The result was the CS with a larger, 985 cc engine and a two-seat body by Charles Duval of Paris. While a longer chassis CO model featured a three-passenger body, it was the perky little Petit Sport, with staggered seating for two, that became best known.

In 1924, Amilcar introduced the CGS. Powered by a 1,074 cc engine, it featured pressure lubrication and four-wheel brakes. With a top speed of 120 km/hr (75 mph), it became popular in competition, particularly in the United Kingdom. For 1927, a revised and lowered version was produced, the CG SS. The second “S” was for “surbaisse,” which amusingly translates as “flattened.” The CG SS became popular elsewhere in Europe, where licensed production took place under several names: “Pluto” in Germany, “Grofi” in Austria, and “Amilcar Italiana” in Italy. In the United States they were sold by Maybach Motors in New York as companions to the massive German automobiles.

Immaculate in French Racing Bleu, this Amilcar CG SS represents the ultimate evolution of the Grand Sport Amilcar and, unlike later cars, has the later wide bodywork with side-by-side seating and doors on both sides. It comes from a large private collection and features a modern electric cooling fan and correct Marchal headlamps as well as much of its original instrumentation. With their lightweight, sporting appearance, Amilcars are delightfully nimble sports cars and a sheer pleasure to drive.
