A native of the Cote d’Azur, Etienne Brandone was born in Nice in 1893, and like many other boys at the turn of the 20th century, was fascinated by the emerging phenomenon of the automobile, a fascination that eventually became the foundation for a profession. Brandone learned the coachbuilding trade with Billeter and Cartier, a Lyon shop whose primary clients were Berliet and Rochet-Schneider, two local carmakers, though there were also Renaults and the occasional Bugatti.

After rising to the position of foreman with Billeter and Cartier, Brandone decided to establish his own operation, setting up shop in Nice, where there were plenty of well-heeled clients willing to pay for automotive exclusivity. And that’s precisely what Carrosserie Brandone delivered, specializing in elegant cabriolets.

With Brandone’s son Pierre taking on an increasingly prominent role in the business, almost every car that emerged from the carrosserie was a unique creation, and many claimed ribbons at French Riviera concours d’elegance. Noteworthy examples included a special bodied Packard V12 and an ex-Le Mans Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 race car in 1935, a Voisin C28 in 1939, and a lordly Hispano-Suiza K6 that claimed the Grand Prix d’Honneur for best coachwork at the 1936 concours in Cannes. Additionally, Brandone bodied numerous Hispano-Suizas in its history as well several Rolls-Royce motor cars. Notably, many of these were two seat Roadsters, a rare sight at the time, perhaps best illustrated in the beautiful Hispano-Suiza K6 owned by Sam and Emily Mann and shown with great acclaim at Pebble Beach just last year.

It seems like such a shame that so few of these still exist, and a tragedy that of the very few examples posted on this site that two of them have been "restored beyond recognition".
